Unrivalled choice Formerly known as “Knuckles,” these controllers contain 87 different sensors, including pressure-sensitive grips (so it can detect when you’re squeezing an object without dedicated buttons), individual finger tracking, and the usual buttons and joysticks. Valve Index Controllers and Base StationsThe Index’s controllers are just as notable as the headset, offering a clearly superior experience to the more traditional Vive controllers. There’s even a slot in the front for add-on USB Type-A modules, which Valve says they’ll give more details on at a later date. The external hardware will include off-ear speakers (not headphones), plus a lighter weight headset with more padding. Your PC will need at least an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX480 GPU, a dual-core CPU with hyperthreading, and 8GB of RAM (though Valve recommends a GTX 1070 or higher with a quad-core CPU for best results). Like its predecessors, it requires you to be wired to your PC, though this time it takes only a single trident cable (DisplayPort, USB, and power). The screen will be full-RGB LCD, not an OLED, which Valve claims will allow for a sharper picture (albeit reduced black levels). With a per-eye resolution of 1440x1600 (same as the Vive Pro), a 120Hz refresh rate (with 144Hz available as an experimental option), and a field of view that’s 20 degrees larger than typical users would see on a Vive, Valve is clearly aiming to step up every aspect of the SteamVR experience. Valve Index SpecsThe Index is a step up from its room-scale predecessors, the HTC Vive and Vive Pro, in just about every way. Since the hardware is compatible with other SteamVR hardware, that means you could buy the entire kit for the full experience, or buy individual components–say, just the headset–and use it with your existing HTC Vive base stations and controllers, if you so desire. The full kit will cost a whopping $1000, though you can also buy each piece of hardware individually: the headset for $500, a pair of controllers for $280, and base stations for $150 each. The Index consists of a full VR kit, including a new headset, new controllers (which up until now have been referred to as “Knuckles” controllers), and new base stations. Valve Index Price and Release DateThe Index will be available for pre-order starting May 1st (today!) on the Steam hardware store, and it’s targeted to ship on July 1st. ![]()
